2004 One
Book for Greater Hartford
Cuando era Puertorriqueña
When I Was Puerto Rican
by
Esmeralda Santiago
One Book,
a program of Hartford Public Library, is a regional effort to engage the
community in a shared experience, the reading of one book. This is an
accessible, affordable and fun literary event that encourages broad
participation and offers opportunities to gather and discuss issues
relevant to our community.
Throughout the
summer and well into the fall, libraries, schools, churches and
community book groups come together to share a common dialogue. They
gather to discuss, in English and in Spanish, the passage of a young
girl who left the rural landscape of Puerto Rico for urban New York. With her
poetic voice and passionate style, Esmeralda Santiago introduces us
to the native island of her childhood and of
her bewildering years of transition in
New York City.
This
year’s One Book When I was Puerto Rican is a triumphant
coming-of-age memoir that gives voice to her cross-cultural journey. The
2004 One Book program culminates October 16 with an author talk and
reception at Hartford Public Library with Esmeralda Santiago. |
